SourceSafe 2005 is a Microsoft-developed database used to track changes to coding projects. This allows a group of coders to work together without accidentally losing or overwriting data, even when working on the same code from different locations via the Internet. To edit code in SourceSafe, you must first "Check Out" the file you want to code, which prevents others from accessing it while you are working on it. After you have edited the code, you can then "Check In" the file to save your changes and make it available again.

Check Out File1

Launch the Visual SourceSafe Explorer, and click the file you want to edit.

Click the "Versions" menu, then select "Check Out." A new dialog box will open.

Select the settings you would like to use from the dialog box, then click "OK." The program will then "Check Out" the file and place it on your computer. You can now edit the file using your programming software, which will vary depending on the type of coding file you are writing.

Click the coding file in the Visual SourceSafe Explorer.

Click the "Versions" menu, then select "Check In." A new dialog box will open.

Type a comment in the "Comment" box that details the changes you have made to the file, then click "OK" to check the file back into the database. This will update the master copy of the file on the database with your changes and allow others to access it again.

Tips & WarningsIf you mark the "Keep Checked Out" box in the "Check In" dialog box, you will update the copy on the database with your newest changes while keeping the item checked out on your computer. This is good for when you want to update the master copy while continuing to make edits on a file.
