An online game is any game that can be played while connected to the Internet. As of February 2011, an example of a 3-D online game is the multiplayer "World of WarCraft." While it is difficult to create a 3-D game, new development engines continue to appear that make the process easier for the average person. While you will need to purchase some of the programs, they are all capable of producing 3-D games that can be put online for your friends to play.
Difficulty: Moderately ChallengingInstructions1Purchase the 3D Gamemaker (see Resources). The program offers more than 12 billion customization options and allows you to create a simple 3-D game without any artistic talent or programming knowledge. It features more than 500 3-D objects and can save a game as an EXE file, which means anyone can install it. However, the program costs $34.99 as of February 2011.
2Download 3D Rad (see Resources), a freeware 3-D game-creation program. Read through all the tutorials (which are free as of February 2011) to get a feel for what the program can do. 3D Rad provides a limited number of resources for you to use in your own 3-D game. After you're finished, 3D Rad lets you upload your game onto a Web page for visitors to play.
3Download Gamestudio (see Resources). The program comes in three versions: a beginner version that features a drag-and-drop interface; an intermediate version that requires minor programming knowledge; and an advanced version that requires extensive programming skills. The more advanced the version, the more powerful the system, the more in-depth games you can create. As of February 2011, the beginner version retails for $99, while the advanced version costs $899.
